his year, the iconic surf shop Hawaiian Island Creations celebrates its 50th an- niversary. What started as a small store
in Kailua, run by brothers Stephen and Jimmy Tsukayama since 1971 has grown throughout the years to 17 stores across three islands with a global brand reputation.
The Tsukayamas loved to surf from a young age. They grew up two blocks away from Kalama Beach in Kailua and one day, a friendly neighbor introducing them to surfing. They were immediately hooked.
“We were just kids, killing time,” remem- bers Stephen. “Kailua was a quieter place back then. We were at the beach all the time — fishing, diving and surfing.”
During those early days, the brothers would make and shape their own surfboards in the garage.
“Sometimes it wouldn’t come out right. There’d be times we’d misshape it and have to start over or try to make it into a smaller board,” he remembers, laughing. “Our parents
