I’m writing just as former Hurricane Linda’s center tracks west just be- low Oʻahu (she went right over Maui). Yes, just in case you somehow missed the notice — it’s hurricane season (June 1 through Nov. 30), so, we’ re pretty much in the middle of it.

Waves In Linda’s Wake; Happy Birthday, Duke
Sure enough, we just had one named Linda move to- ward us a couple weeks ago off Baja. Luckily, she weak- ened and became a gale low (34-47 knots), versus a hurricane (74-95 knots or a category 1).

Duke was his given name GQ, droppin’ in 4U!
(not a nickname or title)?
He was named after his dad, gary@surfnewsnetwork.com Duke Halapu Kahanamoku.

The wet forecast finally came to pass Monday after- noon (Aug. 23) with gales, small craft and high surf advisories, along with flash flood watches. Luckily, the National Weather Service forecast that the Aloha State has about an 80% chance of a near or below average sea- son. Normally, we see about four to five storms annually (ranging from tropical de- pressions to hurricanes).
Duke was born in Hono- lulu in 1890, just before the overthrow. Duke grew up in the outskirts of Waikīkī and, of course, spent plenty of his time at the beach and in the water. To say he was a natural waterman would be a huge understatement.
The world’s greatest surf- ing legend sadly passed away from a heart attack over half a century ago on Jan. 22, 1968; he was just 77 years young. Duke was buried at sea with a huge motorcade and crowd of mourners there to celebrate his amazing life. His ash- es were scattered into the ocean while beach boys sang Hawaiian songs, in-

Of course, surfers look for the silver lining in all things surf, including hur- ricane-driven swells. Mon- day’s surf from former Hurricane Linda was 6 feet local scale or 10-foot faces at Makapuʻu. This is the new threshold for advisories (up from 8-foot faces) for both east and south shores. Our Windward shores had big and unruly surf; not the clean organized waves we usually ride from town to country. Still, surfers — like Eddie Aikau — would go,

for either Duke and today’s B contemporary surfers to imagine riding each other’s surfboards!
