hen Chuck Mitsui moved to Ha- wai‘i in 1992 from San Francisco, the avid skater put down roots —
and wheels — in Kailua.
While there wasn’t an official skate park
available at the time, those looking to skate in Kailua could challenge themselves by doing tricks on a large blue wooden ramp on a flat parcel of pavement sandwiched between Kai- lua District Park and the Kailua fire station.
Mitsui explains that after he opened 808 Skate in Kailua in 1995, kids asked him for information on where to skate. The inquiries, along with his own pursuit of a safe, challeng- ing skating destination, led the business owner to reach out to the City & County of Honolulu about building a permanent skate park.
The blue ramp, which was donated by a family in memory of a skateboarder who had died, was eventually removed by the city in exchange for what would become the Kailua District Park skate park; however, at the time, skaters were left to use “a slab of concrete” that
