made her the surfing world’s first-ever gold medalist for women.
Next up for Moore is the Corona Open presented by Quiksilver Aug. 10-19 at Bar- ra de la Cruz, Mexico. It’s one of the best “point breaks” on the planet when it’s working, and Moore knows how to surf
right-hand point breaks better than most on the World Cham- pionship tour, plus she knows how to get barreled better than most, too. The momentum is clearly on her side as she’s the reigning world champ, and
of course, she’s the first-ever Olympic surf champion.
Hō‘ailona is a word that means someone is being watched over by their ances- tors (kūpuna). In Moore’s case, it sure feels like the great Duke Kahanamoku is watch- ing over her. He was always filled with aloha, reaching out to others to enrich their lives. Moore has shared many times about her desire to “live alo- ha” like Kahanamoku; and she sure does.

AUGUST 11, 2021 3
Aloha surfers and beachgoers! Can you believe we’re in the final month of summer? It certainly looks and feels like summer — tons of sun and trades along with choppy wind swells and clean off- shore south swells topping the wave height list. The North Shore surf machine will likely start to kick into gear in Sep- tember, but for now it’s most- ly diving, fishing, sailing and paddling — and lounging on the beach.
