tudents at ‘Aiea High School are tack- ling diabetes through a unique partner- ship with Pali Momi Medical Center.
Since August, University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine medical resi- dents at Pali Momi Medical Center have been teaching senior and sophomore health coaching classes at ‘Aiea High School.
The class is built on an innovative eight- week course from the Stanford Youth Diabe- tes Coaches Program, which was developed by Dr. Nancy Morioka-Douglas. Originally from Hawai‘i, Morioka-Douglas is currently a clinical professor at Stanford Medicine.
“Within our health services pathway, we try to look at different community issues,” explains Mary Margaret Peterson, ‘Aiea High School’s health services pathway lead teacher. “Diabetes is a pressing need in our community.”
