Art by Honolulu sculptor Jerry Vasconcel- los is on display at the Keahuolu Courthouse in Kona on Hawai‘i Island.
Another Honolulu sculptor, Kazu Kau- inana, has work displayed at Kualapu‘u Public Conversion Charter School on Moloka‘i.
Since 1967, the Art in Public Places pro- gram has showcased thousands of artists’ work at over 640 sites statewide — libraries, hospitals, office buildings, the state Capitol and Hawai‘i State Art Musuem. These pieces can be enjoyed by all, for free, thanks to this publicly funded program made possible by the Art in State Buildings Law.
That law designated 1% of the construc- tion costs of new buildings go toward the acquisition of works of art, either by com- mission or purchase, says Karen Ewald, di- rector of the Arts in Public Places Program
