umu hula Shona Mae Lam Ho makes it a point to impart upon everyone who is part of her hula hālau — from
3-year-old keiki to 85-year-old kūpuna — that all haumāna (students) are taught to be kind, respectful and humble toward all.
Lam Ho teaches her craft and important aspects of the Hawaiian culture at Ho‘omai- ka‘i Hula Studio, which operates from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday out of the Kahalu‘u Key Project.
Lam Ho started dancing hula when she was 10 years old under the direction of the late Linda Dela Cruz, known as “Hawai‘i’s Song Bird.”
In 1973, she says she was “blessed to be able to travel the world with the best hula sisters and the best of musicians.”
She went on to dance hula under the direc- tion of the late Pauline Padeken and the late uncle George Naope.
“Loving my hula and our Hawaiian cul- ture, I’ve always wanted to share it with our community,” Lam Ho says.
