popular fundraiser for Hawai‘i Animal Sanctuary (HAS) in ‘Aikahi is returning on Satur-
day, July 24. This unique rummage sale is housed at the organization’s WWII bunker at 221 Iliaina St.
HAS is a true sanctuary for unwanted animals. It was founded as a plant nursery located at the back of a valley by Gina Lay, a trained horticulturist who’d also been in- volved in animal rescue for many years.
“The location was unfortunately a dump- ing ground for unwanted animals of many types: cats, dogs, no-longer miniature pigs, (and more),” states volunteer Lytha Con- quest.
Lay began caring for these neglected an- imals; it became a full-time sanctuary in 1994. It’s since moved to the ‘Aikahi area but remains a home to abused, abandoned, handicapped and terminally ill animals; it’s also now home to several hundred cats.
