Hawai‘i Animal Sanctuary’s Rummage Sale’s Scheduled For July 24

“Most clothing is $1, ex- cept for brand-new items (which are) $3-$5. People are generous and donate items that we sell. We are a registered 501(c)(3) charity and can give donation re- ceipts,” Conquest states.
There’s also a hospital ward on-site where animals that need it may recover. When the time comes, it also provides a comfortable place for them to eat and sleep until they pass on.
Popular items that people search out at the sales include kitchenware, clothes, toys, artwork, jewelry — some, including sunrise shell pieces crafted by HAS volunteers — and pillows. Additionally, Lay grows the plants that are available for purchase at the rummage sale.

While adoption is pre- ferred (HAS encourages responsible animal owner- ship; animals are adopted out, however new owners promise to return the ani- mals to the sanctuary, should anything prevent them from being able to care for the pets), the truth of the matter is that most of the animals at HAS will not be adopted. As a result, the requirements of the sanctuary continue to grow — it’s always in need of cat food (wet and dry), cat litter and cleaning sup- plies, including trash bags.
Of course, money helps with getting those supplies and that’s where the rum- mage sale comes in.
Over the years, there have been some eye-catch- ing offerings as well, in- cluding a baby grand piano, an Italian music box table, dragonware dishes, a silk- screen printing machine, a Gary Reed art print and even a replica of historical Kāneʻohe Theater.
Conquest points out that, while it’s nice to have the sanctuary for these ani- mals, “(we hope) that at some point, its services of animal care will no longer be needed.”
