om Typhoney Pedro shares that her son Nakoa is a fifth-grader at Kaʻelepulu Elementary School in
Kailua, whose teacher Paige Banninger has been an amazingly positive instructor during the distance learning necessitated by the pan- demic.
“She has included great books into their curriculum, but the last one was so inspira- tional I couldn’t help but speak up,” Pedro says.
Last quarter, students read A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park. It’s a short novel about the struggles to find clean, safe water in South Sudan. It’s based on the true story of Salva Dut blended with fictional elements and characters.
The book and teachers led Kaʻelepulu Elementary students in discussions that had them looking deeper into what is happening in other parts of the world, Pedro explains.
