college. “Our tutors will be introduced as ‘engineering mentors.’ In addition to pro- viding traditional tutoring on individual classes, some ses- sions may also be reserved for working with students in a true mentorship capac- ity on academic challenges. Castle teachers have identi- fied a need for mentorship
with areas such as: guiding students with STEM-related projects and brainstorming concepts for science fairs, providing students with feedback on STEM projects and presentations, and offer- ing special sessions includ- ing teacher-requested con- tent reviews,” Perez Hults adds.
Organizers estimate that they will be able to serve more than 150 students and deliver more than 1,500 hours of intensive STEM tutoring.
It is designed to construct a bridge between high school and college students, allow- ing high-performing under- graduates to connect with and mentor high schoolers needing extra assistance in math and science.
The college will lever- age its Engineering Student Ambassadors, a group of top-performing students trained to provide outreach to local schools and mentor/ advise fellow students. It will also include participants from its engineering organi- zations and other qualified participants offering tutoring and mentorship.
The college is currently in the process of hiring a target group of 10 student tutors to begin immediate training, preparing them to work with students this spring and sum- mer. The pilot program will run through Sept. 30. There- after, program administra- tors will seek to extend it by securing additional funding. They also envision possibly expanding its future reach with additional partners.
Castle High School and the College of Engineering have previously worked closely together through the years on other partnerships.
The UH College of En- gineering x Castle High School: Intensive STEM Tutoring Program is a pilot project made possible by a $26,912 Harold K.L. Castle Foundation grant.
Through resources avail- able via UH’s Online Learn- ing Academy Program, tutors will be trained in building relationships with
