ith its unique offerings as a fam- ily friendly “living history” mu- seum coupled with a botanical
garden, Hawai‘i’s Plantation Village opens doors and stokes the imagination with a true portrayal of the blend of cultures that sprung from local plantation life.
Evelyn Ahlo, executive director of Ha- wai‘i’s Plantation Village, invites members of the West O‘ahu community, as well as those from across the island, to the 33rd annual Obon Celebration on June 3, from 4 to 10 p.m. at Hawaii’s Plantation Village. Food booths open at 3:30 p.m. Parking will be available at Waipahu Elementary School and Hawai‘i Technology Academy (enter from Malakeke Street) and there will be a free shuttle to and from the event.
According to Ahlo, “The celebration started as a way to preserve the tradition of obon (an annual Buddhist event that commemorates ancestors, whose spirits are believed to temporarily return to the world to visit relatives) that Japanese immigrants
