rom a young age, Waipahu High School senior Harold Jay Cacal has been intrigued by nature and archi-
tecture.
This passion led him to pursue a project
titled Incorporation of Green Roofs in Res- idential Buildings: Exploring Sustainability and Ecological Benefits on O‘ahu. As a re- sult, Cacal recently won a National Society of High School Scholars Foundation Earth Day Award.
What was the impetus for Cacal’s project?
“During a presentation last school year, my classmate discussed possible solutions to solve issues like pollution and climate change,” Cacal states. “Out of the solutions that were mentioned, I was greatly interested in green roofing technology.”
Over the summer, Cacal researched cur- rent applications of green roofs, like Ha- leola‘ili‘ainapono on O‘ahu, but noticing there were few green roof projects in Ha- wai‘i despite their health, ecological and economic benefits.
