umpback whales are back in local waters, which means the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminis-
tration’s Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is holding sever- al designated ocean counts around the state, including in West O‘ahu.
The Sanctuary Ocean Count — which will take place Jan. 28, Feb. 25 and March 25 — is an educational outreach and citizen science project hosted annually during peak whale season, and is highly dependent on volunteers (residents and visitors alike).
From 8 a.m. to noon, participants will tal- ly humpback whale sightings and document the animals’ surface behavior during the sur- vey. Organizers also encourage noting down any other species seen during the count.
Counts will be held at Puʻuloa Beach Park, Ko ‘Olina, Mākua Cave and Ka‘ena Point.
