elected president of the HBDA Council.
Waltz, swing, two-step, fox trot, tango, bacha- ta: This is the short list of ballroom dance classes of- fered by Hawai‘i Ballroom Dance Association, which has locations in Kapolei and ‘Aiea.
For those with a de- sire to dance, HBDA has four venues offering classes throughout the week, and it is not too late to join the fourth quarter, which began Jan. 9 and runs until March. Forty dollars covers quarterly mem- bership dues as well as two dance classes.
Founded in 1959 by Eu- gene and Harriet Ichinose as a nonprofit, HBDA has grown into one of the larg- est ballroom dance organi- zations in the state, “boast- ing over 2,000 members with chapters in almost all islands in its heyday,” ac- cording to HBDA Council president and West sider Willy Dionisio.
The air-conditioned dance studio in ‘Aiea (98- 019 Kamehameha Hwy.) offers classes from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays-Thurs- days with a morning class (9-10:30 a.m.) on Satur- days.

“Prior to the pandemic, dance instructors would teach routines for groups of students, performing at the ‘Aiea studio, a hotel or the Ala Wai Palladium located on top of the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse,” Dioni-
And, while COVID-19 circumstances caused chap- ters to close, classes are op- erating again and welcom- ing new members. Frequent dance socials and the prom- ise of future performances add to HBDA’s repertoire.
The studio’s expansive wooden floor also holds so- cial dances from 6:30 to 9 p.m. every Saturday except the second Saturday of the month.
sio says, adding that the Ichinoses were instrumen- tal in building the Palladi- um’s 11,000-square-foot eucalyptus dance floor back in the day.
“Ballroom dancing im- proves balance, flexibility, coordination and memory, and it is a great social ac- tivity that contributes to self-confidence and a more
positive outlook on life,” Dionisio concludes.
“Whether you are new to ballroom dancing and want to learn a few steps or looking to socialize or exer- cise, there’s something for everyone here at HBDA,” says dance director Faith Agbayani.
“The socials are open to the public with a $10 admissions fee,” Dionisio notes. “Students can prac- tice and be among friends.”
