Community Entities Launch Food Fund

t an Earth Day ceremony held at the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement’s Kapolei headquar-
ters, the nonprofit announced it will works alongside Hawaiʻi Public Health Institute and the Philippine Consulate to launch Ha- waiʻi Fund for Food Gardens, an endeavor that will provide resources for individuals, groups and communities seeking to plant food where they live, work, learn and play.
“Food insecurity is a leading cause of poor health in Hawaiʻi,” states Dr. Susan Mercado, director of food systems and re- siliency of HPHI. “We need to cultivate and care for the land that sustains us and, by growing more of our own fruits and vegetables, we create health for ourselves and health for ʻāina.”
With a mission to “better support com- munity-based efforts for food self-suf- ficiency,” this initiative offers residents with an opportunity to purchase materials — such as seeds, seedlings and gardening tools — to establish their own garden. It
