ayne Hayami always knew he wanted to run his own business, so when the Kaimukī native saw
a Chuck E. Cheese location up for grabs in ʻĀina Haina, he jumped at the opportunity.
Fast-forward nearly 30 years later and he, along with his adult children, own and oper- ate three locations on the island in Honolulu (1199 Dillingham Blvd.), Pearl City (850 Kamehameha Hwy.) and, most recently, Ka- polei (700 Haumea St.).
“Just being ‘the boss’ interested me a lot (and) already spending many birthdays there with my own children, I decided this would be the business for me — making kids and people happy and smiling,” Hayami says.
After taking over the Honolulu site, he opened the Pearl City location, and it quickly became the franchise with the highest sales per square foot in the United States. Hayami describes it as, “a really big win for us.”
Later, in 2008, the ʻĀina Haina store- front moved to City Square Shopping Cen- ter, where it remains today. Ten years later,
