Millions of people around the world will ob- serve April 28 as Denim Day, which is designated as the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign, and West Oʻahu residents are invited to join.
case that sparked interna- tional outrage when a judge overturned a lower court’s conviction of a rapist. Be- cause the victim wore tight jeans, the judge ruled that she must have helped her attacker remove them, thus implying consent. The next day, women in the Italian Parliament arrived at work wearing jeans to show soli- darity with the victim.
The Zonta Club of Leile- hua, a member of Zonta In- ternational, urges individ- uals, families, institutions, businesses and elected of- ficials to wear jeans, then submit a photo to zontal- eilehua@gmail.com. Club president Tracey Parker Kini states, “All photos are welcome ... any island, any state, any country!”
“The Denim Day cam- paign is a call to action for all of us,” states Patti Giggans, founder of Den- im Day. “Wearing jeans is a symbol of protest and a message of solidarity with survivors.”
