Your Ho‘okele
Whoever you decide to share your guide with is the person, or persons, you should turn to for assistance in downloading the Ho‘okele booklet.
For our middle-aged adults who may not have their future wishes well planned, the guidebook helps stimulate your thought process. You may come across a topic or section you never thought about such as “annuities,” which may prompt you to learn more. Or, you may discover a line item like “safe deposit boxes” and remember you wanted to get one to store your family heirlooms.
For a young adults, filling out the Ho‘okele guidebook may be
easier, as much of the relevant information is readily available. Older relatives are likely to still be around to assist with family-related knowledge, such as names of your grandparents and their ethnic composition. As we get older, it may become harder to retrieve historical family information. It’s always best to get such information f irsthand. Younger adults may also f ind that completing their Ho‘okele guidebook is easier simply because they may not have as much to fill out at this point in their lives. Ho‘okele 1.3 covers items like durable power of attorney, long-term care and
appointing trust officers that may not yet be relevant. For a young adults and middle-aged adults alike, this is a great time to look over the guidebook and see what you may need in the future, while also becoming more informed when the time comes.
The Ho‘okele guidebook is just that — a guide. You are not required to fill out every line item, and there will be things that won’t apply to you. But there are most likely many things that do apply to you, so please take the time to document and record some of your most valuable information. The guidebook is a navigator of your affairs, and the roadmap
for the journey you’ve taken and the journey yet to come. By documenting the most important things surrounding your life, you are building your legacy and you will have a better picture of where you are going. Download your copy today at HIFICU.com/gyho.

Guidebook Paulette Ito
“Get Your House in Order” is an initiative to get Hawai‘i’s families more organized, more eff icient and better prepared to withstand anything that may come their way. The campaign covers information including household documents, health and financial records, investment accounts, and much more. In looking over the topics, it may seem this initiative is geared toward the elderly, but, in fact, it is for every adult age 18 and older.
The information shared in this series of articles — as well as on our HIFICU.com/gyho website, our Get Your House in Order TV show and the Ho‘okele guidebook — are useful resources for any age. It’s expected that seniors wanting to get their affairs in order for peace of mind would gravitate toward this initiative, but the whole “Get Your House in Order” program asks everyone
to consider if they have done everything they can to prepare for the future.
Clearly it’s working, because here at Hawaiian Financial Federal Credit Union, we receive calls daily requesting a preprinted guidebook. However, the Ho‘okele guidebook comes in four separate sections and is only available to download online at HIFICU. com/gyho. Once you download the guidebook, we will email you letting you know when the next quarterly edition is available.
For our readers who do not have access to a computer and printer, please start the conversation with loved ones who are able to help. For those who may not want to bother their family members, remember that the Ho‘okele guidebook is a benefit for you and also for them. It’s a roadmap of your intentions and a documentation of your legacy.
