28 MIDWEEK OCTOBER 12, 2022
As much as she enjoyed being in the ocean, surf- ing and paddling as a kid, Keari Shibuya was a little more excited about the bathing suits she
would get to wear.
A lifelong obsession with bikinis paid off for the Ho-
nolulu native, who started her brand, Those Seen Danc- ing, in 2017. Shibuya, who holds an environmental sci- ence degree, is proud to design each piece herself, and works directly with a small production team to ensure the suits are original and ethically made.
The name is part of one of Shibuya’s favorite quotes, “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.”
“To me, it means that as long as we are living au- thentically and enjoying life while not harming others, it doesn’t matter what other people think,” she says. “No matter what we do, there will always be people out there who will judge because they don’t understand. It asks us to consider that when we are on the outside looking in, we are viewing from a different perspective. I think it’s important to remember to listen for the ‘music’ that others are ‘dancing’ to so that we can live with more compassion.”
