hat the ...? I just looked at the calendar and realized that September is nearly over. I must have been asleep at the switch because we don’t
have any Halloween decorations up in our house! Accord- ing to my 25-year-old daughter, we need to start decorating for Halloween.
I don’t know why but it seems her generation likes to celebrate Halloween almost as much as Christmas. Now I’m on a timer to get the outside of our house decorated for Oct. 31.
MALIA HUTTON
Senior Coordinator, Honolulu
“Izu’s Mochi at the Kaka‘ako farmers market. Each piece has a delicately placed topping, and the mochi
is so fresh and soft. All the flavors are so good; I always have a hard time deciding what to get.”
JEFF CANDELARIO
Automotive Technician, ‘Ewa Beach
“I love ice cream because it not only tastes good, but it also cools you down on a hot day.”
GEORGE OLIVEROS
Financial Aid Counselor, Mānoa
“Sweet Lady of Wāiahole from Wāiahole Poi Factory, which is warm kūlolo and haupia ice cream on top. It’s creamy, delicious and hits da spot!”
KATIE SUMMERS
Business Owner, Honolulu
“I love the guava bars from Guava Smoked because they’re the perfect tropical treat to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings.”
I think it was actually the end of August when I noticed Macy’s Ala Moana had Halloween decorations for sale. These retailers keep upping the ante by increasing the shopping calendar for certain holidays.
Last year, I set my Halloween decorating clock to when the first Spirit Halloween store opened. My daughter loves that place, and I will end up dropping some serious coin for decorations. Of course, it wasn’t always like that.
I never decorated the front of our house for Halloween — until about three years ago. A young couple bought the house across the street from us. I came home from work one day and saw that their house looked like the set of the movie Halloweentown. I know this because our daughter has to watch this movie every year, plus all three sequels. And don’t get me started on Hocus Pocus!

I It’s Best To Listen
like to help people, and I know many of you do, too. When we care, it’s natural to want to offer a positive way for them to look at what they are
going through.
That said, I want to share one of the most important
things I’ve learned when trying to help others feel better. Before you start sharing your positive spin on their situation, let them finish. Fully.
If you don’t, even if you mean well, it will send the message that you are not actually interested in how they are feeling. It tells them you are only interested in giving them your take.
The best practice is to listen. Let them speak. Let them finish. Only then, give your positive perspec- tive. Sometimes, listening is the most positive part.

For Christmas, I am the self-proclaimed neighborhood king of decorations. And even though this was Halloween, no one was going to outdo Ron Nagasawa! I went to the nearest Spirit Halloween store and spent the equivalent of a car payment on the scariest decorations I could find.
Once the gauntlet was thrown down, many of our other neighbors started putting up Halloween decorations, too. But the folks across the street kept upping the stakes and put up huge inflatables on their roof.
I went to Longs and City Mill and bought up all the Halloween lights I could find. When my wife started to question my obsession, I told her I was doing it for the neighborhood kids (namely, my daughter and me).
By the time Halloween rolled around, the Spirit Hallow- een store called and asked if they could buy back some of their inventory. OK, not true, but if they did, I would have sold some back as I don’t have the storage space for all that stuff. I mean we already don’t park our cars in the garage because I store all our Christmas decorations in there.
That’s an entirely different story, which I’ll tell as soon as the 24/7 Hallmark Channel Countdown to Christmas season begins in October.
