What does self-care look like to you?

H ere’s an update on my return to Bootcamp workouts. Obviously, I’m writing this, therefore, I’m still alive. And as I write this, I’m into my fourth week of at-
tending classes every day, Monday through Friday.
Because of my work schedule, I attend the 4:45 a.m. class. To allow for getting ready and travel time, that means I have towakeupat3:45a.m.Andinordertodothat,Ihavetobein
bed by 9 p.m. to get at least six hours of sleep.

the people in class, I would never have gone back. I imagine this is the case for most workout classes, whether yoga, Pilates, MMA or even pole dancing.
I believe there are archetypal members in every class, but that’s what makes it fun and unique. This is a rundown of my 4:45 class; see if you recognize some of these “characters”:
First there are our coaches/trainers. Head coach Janine is a sweet upbeat motivator who teaches by her great example. Jaden is a workout scientist. I think he has an actual degree in pain. Gary is more like a stand-up comedian, but is an insane workout artist. Kerry is everyone’s pal. I call him “Da Ham- ma.” Finally, there’s Rosie, a personal favorite, as she is a former member who worked her way from next to me on the mat to being one of our coaches.

WTime To De-stress
hen we are stressed about something, it’s easy to default to the “what if” mindset. “What if this doesn’t work?”
“What if I fail?”
“What if it all goes wrong?”
The “what if” mindset only serves to create more
stress by putting focus on possible negative outcomes. Next time, exchange “what if” (an intangible focus on an uncertain future) for “what is” (a tangible focus on a certainty in the present moment). What do you see around you? What about this situation is certain? In what way are you ready for this?
By shifting “what if” to “what is,” you can step out of the story of your mind and see that what you were imagining is stress-inducing. We don’t live our lives in the future, we live and experience life in the present.

The class of nearly 30 is filled mostly with women. Besides me, there are only four other guys whom I consider young studs, Jesse, Eric, TJ and Julius.
Now for the women. Our branch members are known as the Warriors. That name couldn’t be truer for these women, as they are fearless. Their ages range but it’s like working out with a platoon of Wonder Women.
There are the silent beasts, who in my opinion, could all be trainers: “Petite” Erin, Celeste, Linda, Jasmine, Cessy, Kayleen, Mila, Anna, Lani, Ellen, Amelia, Momi and Susan, our pullup queen. Our newbies, Cory and Kenisha, are drop- ping weight like there’s no tomorrow.
Then there’s my original group of which I’m just one of the “girls.” That would be Sammy, Amy, Myra, Sharon, Denese and “Cowboy” Carol, otherwise known as the “drink lots of wine” girls.
I consider some members as “my little sisters.” Christina, Albertina, Erika and Kim. I know them from the Viper Squad, a Bootcamp team of elites or VIP members. Finally, there’s my self-appointed partner and my class daughter, Dawn. Although by profession she’s some kind of computer wizard, I think she’s secretly interning at Bootcamp for another profession.
As my partner, she’s training to be a kūpuna care physical therapist.
