Easing The Financial Toll Of Cancer
A mong the myriad impacts of cancer, financial toxicity may not be top of mind for many. Unlike side effects such as hair loss from che- motherapy, it’s an invisible consequence that is not ob- vious to outsiders. The loss of income from an extended leave of absence compound- ed by mounting expenses in medical costs, complemen- tary treatment and purchases of support equipment create a financial hardship for many cancer patients. We are a small grassroots organization that is 100% run by volunteers — many of them breast cancer sur- vivors, such as myself and the co-founders. We are also powered behind the scenes by a group of ambitious interns from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and Kalani High School. Every dollar stays in Hawai‘i to support local cancer patients, survivors and their families. Donations to help continue programs like the CARE Closet can be made online at breastcancer- hawaii.org.
