altz, swing, two-step, fox trot, tan- go, bachata: This is the short list of ballroom dance classes offered by
Hawai‘i Ballroom Dance Association, which has locations in ‘Aiea and Kapolei.
Founded in 1959 by Eugene and Harriet Ichinose as a nonprofit, HBDA has grown into one of the largest ballroom dance orga- nizations in the state, “boasting over 2,000 members with chapters in almost all islands in its heyday,” according to HBDA council president Willy Dionisio.
And, while COVID-19 circumstances caused chapters to close, classes are operat- ing again and welcoming new members. Fre- quent dance socials and the promise of future performances add to HBDA’s repertoire.
An unexpected HBDA member was Di- onisio.
