“Prior to the pandem- ic, dance instructors would teach routines for groups of students, performing at the ‘Aiea studio, a hotel or the Ala Wai Palladium located on top of the Ala Wai Golf Course clubhouse,” Dionisio describes, adding that “the Ichinoses were instrumental in building the Palladium’s 11,000-square-foot eucalyp- tus dance floor.”

HBDA Invites Leeward O‘ahu Residents To Put A Little Pep In Their Step
“When we moved to our new home in Makakilo, our neighbor, Jack Legal, an ex- ecutive associate of HBDA, encouraged my wife to join the Waipahu chapter — the closest chapter to our home at that time,” he recalls. “Like many husbands, she had to drag me to class.”
“Ballroom dancing improves balance, flexibility, coordination and memory, and it is a great social activity that contributes to self-confidence and a more positive outlook on life.”
In a short amount of time, however, Dionisio was hooked on ballroom dance, becoming the volunteer Waipahu chapter president and eventually being elect- ed president of the HBDA Council.
The air-conditioned dance studio in ‘Aiea (98-019 Kamehameha Hwy.) of- fers classes from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with a 9-10:30 a.m. class on Saturdays.
The Kapolei HBDA chap- ter, formerly the Waipahu chapter, holds classes 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from at Makakilo Commu- nity Park.

For those with a desire to dance, HBDA currently has four venues offering classes throughout the week, and it is not too late to join the fourth quarter, which began Jan. 9 and runs until March. Forty dollars covers quarter- ly membership dues as well as two dance classes.
The dance studio’s expan- sive wooden floor also holds social dances from 6:30 to 9 p.m. every Saturday (except the second Saturday of the month).
HBDA also exists on neighbor islands with class- es in Hilo and Kahului.

“The socials are open to the public with a $10 admis- sions fee,” Dionisio notes. “Students can practice and be among friends.”
With classes resuming, performances might also be resurrected.
