Maryknoll School ‘Star’ Wins NASA Perseverance Award

to chat with the Persever- ance team,” says Maya. “I asked the NASA engineers a question about how they created the Mars test envi- ronment for the Ingenuity helicopter while on Earth. I also received a message from the Perseverance rov- er on Mars and a packet of cool NASA gear.”
And, she is presently working with her eighth- grade teachers to revive our recycling program on campus. When Maya is not serving the community, she is an example of a mod- el student. I am amazed at how Maya is well-liked by her peers. Watching her during recess is fun. She throws the football with the boys, plays volleyball with the girls and mingles with everyone. I can always de- pend on her to be inclusive, especially for new stu- dents.”
Maya Kimura, an eighth-grader at Maryk- noll School, is a star in the classroom and communi- ty. Her light even caught the attention of NASA, as she recently received the agency’s “You’ve Got Per- severance!” award. (Perse- verance is the name of NA- SA’s Mars rover.)
Maya’s determina- tion was recognized and rewarded thanks to her seventh-grade teacher Kathleen Perreira, who nominated her.
According to NASA’s Mars website, the award goes to sixth- to 12th-grad- ers who “have demonstrat- ed perseverance in their academic pursuits.” The agency recognized 11 stu- dents from across the coun- try at its awardee webinar in February.
Perreira believes Maya is a person of integrity and says she saw firsthand how Maya went to great lengths to either help others or ac- complish a goal, in spite of challenges. According to Perreira, these include

working hard for the school’s volleyball team, and studying long hours with a tutor to prepare for a high school credit course in algebra.
