he giant Christmas tree at Pu‘u O Kaimukī Mini Park has been light- ing up the community’s holiday
season for more than three decades. It has become a tradition for many to take a trip to the cozy park with family or a loved one, but even after all this time, some still do not realize how much aloha is behind all the lights.
“Hawaiian Electric provides new lights and bucket trucks to install them,” shares Summer Shiigi, Keep It Kaimukī assistant and owner of Ten Tomorrow. “The team that works on the tree year after year are volunteers from HECO and IBEW (Inter- national Brotherhood of Electrical Work- ers) 1260, who donate their time and exper- tise off the clock. Keep It Kaimukī works with the City & County (of Honolulu) for all the necessary permits. Plus, Katherine Cho and her City and County parks team help facilitate everything on-site. It’s such a melting pot of people from everywhere coming together to light the tree.”
