he first waves of change that led to the founding of Sustainable Coast- lines Hawaiʻi, during an impromptu
brainstorm session a decade ago that focused on ways to help Hawai‘i’s fragile coastal ecosystem, have steadily grown into a tidal wave of positive momentum.
Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi, a non- profit based on Oʻahu and driven by a mis- sion to inspire local communities to care for their coastlines, was started 10 years ago by “eight friends sitting around a table in Kaimukī trying to figure out ways to make a difference in their community,” as com- munications manager Monica McLenigan explains.
A decade later, Sustainable Coastlines Hawai‘i has cleaned up more than 500,000 pounds of debris from state coastlines with the help of nearly 35,000 volunteers, and has educated over 40,000 students along the way.
