St. John Vianney School In Kailua Holds May Day Event
St. John Vianney School celebrated May Day on May 5 with song and dance honoring island and Native Hawaiians cultures. The event was named Mahalo Aku a Mahalo Mai, which means the importance of respecting each other, working together and caring for each other. The celebration took place in the decorated parish hall at 920 Keolu Drive in Kailua. The Royal Court featured
a king, queen and princes and princesses, who represented each Hawaiian Island. They were preceded by two conch shell blowers, a kapu stick bearer, kāhili bearers and ladies in waiting. Each class from prekindergarten through seventh grade performed a hula, which included the songs White Sandy Beach of Hawai‘i, What a Wonderful World and Sassy Little Mynah Bird. The event featured a hula by the royal court and concluded with the queen’s hula. Kumu hula Jack McKeague, school faculty, staff and volunteers spent many hours instructing each class and preparing for this special day. In addition,
a variety of plants and flowers were donated to decorate the parish hall.
