hen Kathleen Stuart was young, her family had a “no singing at the dinner table” rule because, as
she recalls, her singing was “unstoppable.” The budding performer liked the physical feeling and “fullest expression of myself” that came from singing and enjoyed mimick- ing Broadway cast recordings “syllable by syllable, imitating the color and emotion in
performers’ voices.”
While growing up in Kāne‘ohe and attend-
ing He‘eia Elementary, King Intermediate and Castle High schools, Stuart performed in plays and musicals across the Honolulu com- munity theater circuit.
She started performing in Ron Bright’s musical revues as a 10-year-old fifth grader and was cast as the lead in South Pacific and The King and I as a sophomore and junior. Following high school, Stuart explains that she was introduced to the founder of a the- ater conservatory — a three-year, musical theater Bachelor of Fine Arts program in London — that she graduated from.
