Machinal, by playwright and journalist Sophie Tread- well, was inspired by the re- al-life 1928 case of convicted and executed murderer Ruth Snyder. It is considered one of the high points of expression- ist theater on the American stage, emphasizing high inten- sity and stylized movement. Described as thought-provok- ing, tragic and full of sym- bolism, Machinal shows the subjective reality of a single woman thrust into an over- ly mechanized, materialistic world.
The cast features Marie Richter, Stuart Featheran, Noah Nakachi, Sydney Ishi- kawa, Chivalry Butler and many more.
In addition to Machinal, there will be a 30-minute com- panion piece, The Stain by Timothy Kimura, a one-act play about mental illness set in Kapahulu during the 1930s.
Several local students can be seen in Machinal, playing now at Windward Community College Palikū Theatre.
