KBY DON ROBBINS
e Kula ʻo Samuel M. Kamakau, Laboratory Public Charter School — a prekindergarten through 12th
grade Hawaiian medium charter school in Kāne‘ohe — sent 16 students to participate in the Montessori Model United Nations confer- ence in New York City March 15-18.
For the past eight months, students have been studying after school and participating in meetups with global peers that culminated in New York during the multiday worldwide education experience. It allowed students to learn about the United Nations, the largest international peacekeeping and humanitarian organization in the world.
This was the first time the school attended the conference, and it is the only Hawaiian medium school representing Hawai‘i this year. A Hawaiian medium school is defined as a family-based Hawaiian language immersion school that offers a comprehensive multilevel program with a focus on cultural-based edu- cation.
