Hospital Celebrates 60 Years Of Service

n Jan. 16, 1963, Castle Memorial Hospital opened with 72 beds and 14 bassinets. Now, Windward O‘ahu’s
only hospital — renamed Adventist Health Castle — is a 160-bed facility and also oper- ates eight clinics and four urgent cares island- wide, serving residents with health care needs, including emergency services, routine wellness checks, cancer care, diabetes education, birth- ing, imaging, surgery, pharmacy, weight loss, physical therapy and more.
“We are proud to offer high-quality, safe patient care close to home,” says communi- cations manager Janel Len.
Ten years of concerted community efforts — along with two tragedies — led to the opening of the desperately needed medical care facility. In 1953, Windward O‘ahu’s closest care facility was a 45-minute drive over the unpredictable old Pali Road, and ambulance services only operated between 1 and 9 p.m. Fridays-Tuesdays.
