what kind and compassion- ate care for farmed animals looks like through leading by example,” states Palomino. “We hope to change the ways people see farmed animals, so they get to know each of our residents and understand they also have unique personalities and traits, just like companion animals (like cats and dogs). We want to educate the pub- lic about some of the com- mon cruelties farmed animals experience and help foster a community of people that are actively working to improve their quality of life.”
Compassion runs as wild and free as the residents of Aloha Animal Sanctuary, a Kahalu‘u-based nonprofit dedicated to housing and car- ing for farmed animals.

“We are the first nonprofit farmed animal sanctuary on O‘ahu,” explains Palomino. “A farmed animal sanctuary is a place where rescued farmed animals can live out their lives in peace, free from harm,
Palomino notes the animals living at the oasis are discov- ered by “good Samaritans in our communities” who turn to the nonprofit to provide them with medical and long-term care. Aloha Animal Sanctuary can provide an array of treat- ments, such as hoof care, de- worming, antibiotics and pain management, and the organi- zation works with veterinari- ans for surgeries or if a higher
“We strive to feed the an- imals the healthiest food for them as well as supplement their diet with fresh, donated produce from Down to Earth,” states Palomino. “We do our best to create environments for them that have enrichment and replicate features their natural habitats would pro- vide as well.
