Windward Woman EWins Kūpuna Bee

rika Engle of Kāne‘ohe correctly spelled “effervescent” to be crowned the Kūpuna Spelling Bee grand
champion recently at Ali‘iolani Elementary School in Kaimukī.
A longtime love for words and a mindset to persevere led her to rise to the top of the podium among finalists from all four coun- ties and also to receive the trophy for being the top speller in the 60-to-69-year-old age category.
To prepare, Engle repeatedly studied na- tional Scripps Spelling Bee lists.
“I feel that overconfidence is the enemy of success,” she says.
Engle’s word studying habits started at a young age.
