ualoa-Heʻeia Ecumenical Youth (KEY) Project at 47-200 Waihe‘e Road in Kāneʻohe opens its doors to
hundreds of Windward residents, both young and old, every month.
Founded in 1968, KEY Project initial- ly was created to provide a safe space for low-income and at-risk keiki living in the community. However, throughout the years, KEY Project evolved and offered up its ser- vices to kūpuna, too.
“In times where the world seems unstable, I see KEY Project as a pu‘uhonua, or refuge, for community members who need a stable and welcoming place to come to,” states ex- ecutive director ‘Auli‘i Dudoit. “This idea of safe space has been a cornerstone of and pillar of many discussions about how our commu- nity determines our health. Whether there’s a need for more water for our area farmers, access to food, social and emotional support for our youth and kūpuna, gentrification, rec- ognizing achievements and milestones, and, most importantly, the human connection.”
