Youth Create First Hau‘ula Hale In More Than A Century
Eighteen young people from the Windward com- munity of Hauʻula and sur- rounding ahupuaʻa have built the first traditional Ha- waiian hale (thatch house) in Hauʻula in over 100 years.
The youth are part of a summer internship program at Maunawila Heiau com- plex run by Hawai‘i Land Trust called the Maunaw- ila ʻŌpio Mālama ʻĀina Summer Program. HILT is a statewide local nonprofit land trust that protects, stew- ards and connects people to the lands that sustain Ha- waiʻi.

and building stronger con- nections to ʻāina. Held each year at Maunawila Heiau complex, the program was created to teach wahi kūpu- na stewardship practices to high school students and young adults who live in the Ko‘olauloa area. Youth are provided with a stipend to support educational goals.
and in the process, they learn to build community, and build each other while connecting and learning ku- leana to this valuable wahi kūpuna we have right here at home in Hau‘ula,” states Kealaulaokamamo Leota, Maunawila Heiau complex educator and steward. “The hope is to give our ‘ōpio a better understanding of alo- ha ‘āina and that it can be a
job opportunity as well as a lifestyle.”
The City & County of Ho- nolulu’s Grant-In-Aid Pro- gram, Hawaiʻi Tourism Au- thority, in partnership with Hawaiʻi Community Foun- dation, and private funders, provided support for the hale build and program.
The focus of the youth program, which started June 6, was kūkulu: building hale, building community
Youth met from Monday to Friday for five weeks. In addition to building the tra- ditional Hawaiian hale, ac- tivities included removing invasive plants, trail mainte- nance, archaeology, planting native plants, community work, learning mo‘olelo (tradition), oli (chant) and pule (prayer), conducting
Partners included Tiana Henderson, CEO of Indi- geniUS Minds, who led the hale build with HILT staff trained by master hale build- er Francis Palani Sinenci.
