special play called Who You Again? written by Kāne‘ohe resident Ryan “Oki” Okinaka has arrived at
Kumu Kahua Theatre on Merchant Street in Honolulu.
Inspired by a personal journey, the story follows a family struggling to care for their matriarch as dementia slowly steals her mem- ories away. Her grandson’s method of exist- ing within — and adding to — the imagina- tive world she inhabits creates a special bond. The play began March 24 and runs through April 24.
“In 2018, my family said goodbye to the person we thought would outlive us all: my grandma, Maile Cazimero,” states Okinaka. “At the time, I was training to be a flight at- tendant with Hawaiian Airlines, and I forced myself to place the pain and grief aside, in an effort to focus and get through training. After earning my wings, I was finally able to process the loss of my grandmother, and in doing so, I channeled my grief and emotions into the play you’re about to see. Writing and watching this
