embers of the Coalition for a To- bacco-free Hawai‘i Youth Council unveiled a display at Windward
Mall in Kāne‘ohe on Jan. 9 with the mission of collecting 21,000 pairs of new slippers to bring attention to their message that the lead- ing cause of preventable death in the U.S. is smoking. The display will be at the mall through Jan. 30.
Each pair of slippers represents one of the 21,000 children alive today in Hawai‘i who will ultimately die from smoking unless the existing smoking rates decrease, the coali- tion states.
The Youth Council is asking organizations and individuals to help them reach their goal by dropping off slippers at the Windward Mall Center Court display.
People are encouraged to write the name of a loved one who has been negatively impacted by smoking or vaping on a small piece of paper, and attach it to the slipper when adding them to the display.
