llan Silva traces his basketball roots back to when he was a kid growing up in Kailua and his dad put up a
basketball hoop in the back yard. Silva would challenge one of his best friends, Richard Ol- sen, and his father, Roy, and his excitement around the sport took off from there.
While attending Kailua High School, Sil- va climbed the ranks as a player, eventually making the varsity squad as a junior. While he spent most of his time as a role player, he worked with the coaches to improve.
Assistant coach Bill Souza taught Silva to shoot “five days before our team was going to play Punahou in the state championship.” As Silva explains, with Punahou well ahead late in the game, he entered the contest and made four long-range shots in a row. The con- fidence gained in that stretch allowed Silva to start as a senior and was part of Kailua’s OIA championship squad before going on to star at Chaminade University.
