our neighbors,” Cabagbag says. “From there, with re- lationships being built and neighbors beginning to know one another, we found a solid group of people who had the same hope in creating a com- munity that reflects aloha for all. As we began to simply look around our neighbor- hood we asked: ‘Where can aloha for all be known?’ That led to conversations and part- nerships with other like-mind- ed groups and businesses who have a similar heart for our neighborhood.”
Hawai‘i provided 500 low-in- come keiki in Kāne‘ohe with school supplies when they returned to in-person learning. Last week, Our Kahuhipa or- ganized “Hanohano for Our Kūpuna,” as participants de- livered fresh roses from Pick- et Fence Florist with hand- written notes of hope, honor and “hellos” to residents at The Plaza at Kāne‘ohe for Grandparents Day on Sunday.

“At the start of the pan- demic, we wanted to remind each neighbor that even though we are facing unprec- edented times, the way we show up for one another in our
community will look differ- ently,” Cabagbag says. “This led to ‘Wine about COVID,’ wherein neighbors brought their own chair and beverage of choice, and while donning their masks and sitting 6 feet apart, created an even deeper relationship given the space we held for one another as we shared in the daily woes and
worries from the pandemic.” Our Kahuhipa hosts quar- terly outreach events for the houseless on the Windward side called “Lotta Love.” The organization partners with Grace in Growlers, The Ark Christian Church, Local Boy Sushi, Target Kailua and com- munity members to provide a free pop-up shopping experi-
ence featuring “lightly loved” clothes, generously portioned grab-and-go bentos, and laun- dry kits filled with quarters and necessities for washing clothes.
The group recently held its first-ever school supply drive- up donation event called “Got Yo’ Back! (Packs),” as New Hope Windward and Fisher

“The Our Kahuhipa team is constantly looking for ways for aloha to be known for all,” Cabagbag says. “We’ve also seen how just one simple neighborhood event can spark interest and partnership among other peo- ple who have been thinking about what good they can do for their neighbors here in Kāne‘ohe. If this is some- thing that speaks to your heart, let’s connect!”

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Our Kahuhipa’s most popular of its slate of monthly potluck dinners fea- tured a seafood bake to which 30 neighbors contributed in- gredients.
Our Kahuhipa began with street cleanups and has grown to service the community wherever it sees a need, including bringing treats to kūpuna, distributing food and — before the pandemic — potluck dinners. PHOTOS COURTESY OUR KAHUHIPA
