Girls Summit Youth, an enriching, fun summer program that builds critical think- ing, decision-making skills and empow- ered confidence for girls in grades 6-8, is accepting applications for sessions in July and August at YWCA Kokokahi. Interest- ed participants may apply at mcblhawaii. org/girls-summityouth and select their pre- ferred dates: July 12-16; July 19-23; July 26-30 or Aug. 2-6.
of the tuition for those families who can demonstrate need. The program wants to provide all girls with the opportunity to participate in the summer program. Re- quirements to qualify for financial aid are noted on the registration page.
Two Waimānalo-based nonprofits were recently awarded $25,000 grants from Hawaiian Electric.
The weeklong program, which features a curriculum of yoga, creative reading and writing, CPR education, financial man- agement tips, advocacy exploration and a community focused project, has been host- ed by the Patsy T. Mink Center for Busi- ness & Leadership since 2018.
“At YWCA O‘ahu and the Patsy T. Mink Center for Business & Leadership, we believe there is an opportunity, as well as a responsibility, to nurture girls of all ages to become the leaders of tomorrow,” states director Colleen McAluney.
The funds will go to sup- port initiatives at Hui Māla- ma O Ke Kai and Waimāna- lo Learning Center that are aimed at building community resilience. Both organizations offer programs that are rooted in community engagement, educational excellence and Hawaiian culture — aspects that are important to Hawai- ian Electric’s own sustainabil- ity and resilience initiatives.

The cost to attend Girls Summit Youth is $200 per child, however financial as- sistance is still available with up to 75%
“Middle school can be a challenging so- cial passage, and we are committed to pro- viding the young women of Hawai‘i with the tools not just to survive, but to thrive.
