online sessions and hosted outdoor classes, as allowed, during the shutdown.
It took her a while to get on board with what her therapist was saying: her high-intensity workouts were at the root of the pain she was experiencing.
“We give credit to the city and county and chamber of commerce grant programs for helping keep us afloat; we wouldn’t have made it otherwise,” Loo asserts.
Her quest led her to dis- cover the benefits of low-im- pact workouts (“It was so great, I noticed a huge dif- ference!”), three of which arefeaturedatBreatheYoga + Barre, which opened its second location in Kailua last week.
Loo initially didn’t plan to open a second studio.
The new studio is located at 315 Uluniu St. and fea- tures the full slate of offer- ings found at her first loca- tion in Kāneʻohe: Katonah yoga (Breathe is the only studio on island that offers this style), aerial yoga and barre classes.
“It feels a bit ambitious to be opening a second location in the midst of a pandemic, but the opportunity present- ed itself at the perfect time and we have faith that it will be a success.”
average age of our students is mid-40s and a lot of them, a good 80% of them, are just starting out with exercise in general,” she says.
Much like her search for a solution to her physical pain, the journey of the past year with Breathe Yoga + Barre has been one of resilience, perseverance and vision.
The Kailua outpost fea- tures a large, bright studio flanked on one side by win- dows and a wall of mirrors on the other.
“So, we’re very accommo- dating. You come in class and probably half the class is be- ginner (level). So, brand-new to yoga, to aerial. They defi- nitely come more for the com- munity than the exercise.”

“But, once I saw the space, it was just such a great opportunity.

“I was always driving into town to go to yoga and barre classes, which often turned a one-hour class into a three-hour event. I had al- ways wondered why no one opened a studio in Kāneʻo- he, and I figured I might as well give it a shot,” she says.
“Full-body wellness is re- ally the best medicine,” she asserts.

The Kāneʻohe studio, lo- cated at 46-174 Kahuhipa St., had only been open for five months when the pan- demic forced it to close; re- opening last fall according to state and city guidelines. In the interim, however, the studio lost 80% of its clients.
“We consider all of our classes to be multilevel and suitable for beginners — our teachers are great at tailoring the class to fit each student,” Loo explains.
“We were very fortunate to have such a large space to accommodate the social dis- tancing that we never knew was coming,” she adds.
Loo leads some barre classes herself, which are taught in the Lotte Berk tra- dition, as well as some of the yoga classes. Most classes are in-person, however she anticipates keeping the on- line sessions for those who can’t make it into the studio.
