My kids got their first “pet” a year or so ago. The bird is hand-raised, can bare- ly fly, and doesn’t stay in a cage. We lost her. As they say, the first 48 hours is cru- cial for anyone missing. Our neighbors helped search for hours even while it was rain- ing (true Kāneʻohe weather). We put up posters when it was dark. The kids barely ate and slept. My son had state exams the next day and knew he couldn’t go look till he was done.
My kids learned so many life lessons from this that’s so hard to teach and pass on to them. They stated, “There are still some super nice people in the world.”
