“Still, everybody has the passion and the desire, and there’s no excuses. They have a commitment to high performance,” Glenn says.
“The city and state could do a lot more to encourage youth sports,” he says.

policies make it difficult. Glenn says it’s been man- ageable, but frustrating, es- pecially because not only the high-level athletes are affected.
“A lot of opportunities for lower-tier athletes have been diminished. Kids enjoy swimming,” he notes.
“We’ve had all these ob- stacles in the past year due to COVID-19 regulations,” he adds.
“I have a passion for physical fitness and being involved in the communi- ty, and kids gaining confi- dence in themselves,” Glenn shares.
Challenges include not being to hold practices in Kailua to the same degree as in previous times and the student-athletes having to find alternative pools in which to swim.
He adds that he’d like the city and state to open all sports.

 Kailua’s Aulea Swim Club Student-athletes ‘Make A Splash’

Swim Team” has been to- gether for 66 years. Glenn says he’s the third coach in the history of the club and has been there for the past seven years.
Even in the midst of a challenging pandemic, there’s positive news com- ing from the Windward side in sports. The high school swim season is underway, and Kailua-based Aulea Swim Club currently has four the five national-level athletes of high school age in the state, shares head coach Joe Glenn.
The teens have been practicing with the club for years, Glenn explains.

     “This group has combined for four individual state high school titles, 10-plus relay titles,10individualILH(In- terscholastic League of Ho- nolulu) titles and many other accomplishments,” notes Glenn, a Kāneʻohe resident.
“I think they can win un- less they face each other. Every time one of them hits the water, they should be winning,” he declares.
Caps received the top rat- ing among 16-year-olds in the 100-meter breaststroke in the United States during 2020, he adds.
The following week, they will travel to St. Petersburg, Florida, for the International Swim Coaches Association Senior Cup. There, they’ll be trying to make it to the Olympic trials, which will take place in June in Omaha, Nebraska.
He explains that the ILH championships are sched- uled for March 13.
