Spring kicked off March 20 with a solid 4-to- 6-foot north-northeast event, so that brought renewed hope and stoke to surfers. In addi- tion, March 25 brought a new era for fun in the sun with the debut of the Wai Kai Wave, the state’s first stationary, deep-water surf wave pow- ered by human-made technol- ogy. It’s located at the LineUp at Wai Kai, a recreational hub that’s five minutes from my place in ‘Ewa Beach. The name Wai Kai is a poetic mar- riage of Hawaiian meaning.

In addition to the endless wave, The LineUp at Wai Kai also features a 52-acre lagoon for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaks, outrigger canoes, surf skis and other water craft. The Wai Kai wave spans about 100 feet and can be set any- where from 2 feet to 6 feet, plus, it allows up to three lanes. This wave emulates a natural standing river wave like Waimea and is endless as long as the water flows and your legs hold out.
“It’s the perfect environ- ment to improve surfing technique and try out dif- ferent tricks because it’s a never-ending ride,” says big- wave champion and world- class waterman Kai Lenny.

Finally, the AccesSurf ‘ohana will host Wounded Warrior Day at the Beach. This calls all active service members and veterans with a disability to join in a day of surfing at White Plains Beach again. It is from 9 a.m. to noon on April 19. Volunteers are al- ways needed and the set starts at 7:45 a.m.
