ite surfers ever, and it’s just an honor,” says Robinson. “To feel everything, all the emotions at the start of the year, you don’t know how you’re going to come back. I was feeling good, but you never know with this beast, with Pipeline. This one’s the most special. I’m super grateful for this start here in Hawai‘i, and I’m just getting myself ready to run that road. It was a low one last year, but I also learned a lot, and there’s no price on that.”
up at Pipe for the past two years, so this one felt special.
With her always-respectful humility and aloha, Moore shares, “I’m so happy, and there are just so many emotions just to get this win. For the women, it’s been so many years in the making, and having us out at a crazy wave like Pipeline and just trying to spend more time has been such a process. After finishing the season like I did last year, it’s nice to come away with a win and wipe that slate clean. To win an event that’s in honor of Andy Irons is so special. He’s one of my favorite surf- ers of all time, and I always appreciated the time he took for me.”
Finally, on a sad note, the surf world lost a legend — Larry Haynes on Feb. 10 from a heart attack after stand-up paddle- boarding at Laniākea. I send my prayers to his daughter Lilly, his family and friends.
Robinson happens to be another child prodigy like Moore. This “West Oz Wiz- ard” can more than handle any slab, any uber gnarly wave, anywhere on Earth. He can also do the latest tricks and slices in small surf.
For more than three decades, Larry was a North Shore pillar, filmmaker and cinematographer. Nobody could keep up with that beast of a man. He loved what he did and just being in the ocean. He was a North Shore classic.
Robinson has also come into his own the past couple years and many are talking about a world title for this 25 year old. He’s won four events already in less than three years — 2021 was his first full year. This is an elite and rare record. Robinson was in the final five last year at Trestles Beach in San Diego for the final show- down, ending at No. 3 in the world. He’s got a steely focus — the eye of the tiger. Yet, he’s down to earth and, like Moore, exudes humility with confidence.
On land, he was the friendliest wave fiend you ever met. His smile said so much about him. During my more than 40 years of surfing, Larry and I logged in quite a few surf sessions at those neigh- borhood spots. It was always a pleasure to share surfing with him when he wasn’t working.
