FEBRUARY 22, 2023
Aloha surfers and beachgoers, February hasn’t come close to January’s su- perb surf production in size or consistency and the fore- cast suggests that it won’t. Indeed, this month has been one of the smallest aver- ages in decades — about 4 feet. Normally, December, January and February are the big three. Yet, as of this writing, we’ ve had only one northwest swell that neared 8 feet — that was Feb. 13 for the Hurley Pro Sunset. Most reefs on the North Shore were about 5 feet.
The pumping pattern has changed.
Moore defeated two- time world champion Tyler Wright of Australia in the final, while Robinson over- came Leonardo Fioravan- ti of Italy. So now, our two new yellow jersey holders take their No. 1 positions to Sunset Beach for the Hur- ley Pro Feb. 12-23. As of this writing, we needed at least a couple more days to find out winners of stop No. 2 on the World Champion- ship Tour. Check surfnews- network.com for the latest details.

Robinson, Moore Come Out On Top At Pipe Contest
Another rarity was the number of days we had super strong trades and ex- tra-large wind swell.
No matter what Mother Nature provides, or doesn’t, the biggest surf competi- tions on the planet must go on.
We had the Billabong Pipe Pro finish up Feb. 7 in 3-5-foot surf the first half of the day and 2-3-foot surf the last half. Extremely windy northeast trades made for challenging, less than opti- mal conditions. Surfers had

to run overlapping heats to make sure they could finish before the surf disappeared.
At the end of the day, we had two new Pipe champs — five-time world champ
Carissa Moore and a rela- tive newcomer from West Australian, Jack Robinson.
