hen plans for O‘ahu’s “second city” began, residents, public servants and elected officials ad-
vocated for the Kapolei community to have a library. With support from the state legis- lature, construction commenced for an ini- tial library building in June 2000. On Aug. 14, 2004, Kapolei Public Library opened its doors to the community.
Before that, though, a group of devoted com- munity members met regularly in the Laulima Room of the James Campbell Building — forming the Friends of the Library Kapolei.
With Carolyn Golojuch as president and Kristine Newman as vice president, the pio- neering “friends” volunteered to support the soon-to-open library by organizing a literacy festival, holding a poetry slam for students, se- curing donations, purchasing books and plan- ning future programs.
“Friends of the Library Kapolei were active early on, being instrumental in setting up fund- raising to support the coming library,” says Delta Westcot, a Kapolei High School teacher
