P. 7

The history of lifeguarding in Ha- wai‘i goes way back, from Duke Kah- anamoku and the Waikīkī Beach Boys in the 1920s to Eddie Aikau on O‘ahu’s North Shore in the 1970s. Then our next inno- vation generation was Brian Keaulana and Terry Ahue, who pioneered the use of Jet Skis with the Hawaiian lifeguards in the 1990s. This one advance has saved count- less lives globally.
They discuss the risks of surfing these life-threatening waves and the role of our lifeguards, especially on the North Shore.
Hawai‘i holds a blood drive at Kapolei Commons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 808- 848-4770 or visit bbh.org to make an appointment.
Big Wave Guardians also shares the near- death stories of many, and actual death, like the loss of big-wave surfer Sion Milosky. The movie also shares the next evolution of safety in numbers, the formation of the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group in 2011.
Mahalo for being here with me in Mid- Week’s West O‘ahu Voice to share the stoke, awe and gratitude.

push the limits. It focuses on the mecca of surfing, the 7-mile stretch known as the North Shore. But the story goes well be- yond our shores. It’s a story of risk and re- ward, life and death — and how lifeguards and training can make the difference be- tween the extremes.
Throughout the show there’s an amaz- ing cast of some of the world’s best watermen and women: 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, and big-wave char- gers Mark Healey, Greg Long and Ke- ala Kennelly. There are Hawai‘i’s most notable lifeguards, including Clyde Aikau, Ahue, Mark Cunningham, Dave Wassel and Johnny Angel.
